In Her Mind’s Eye

Dear Friends,

I hope the summer is treating you well! We have some good news to share with you about our scholarship plans for the year, and an important event coming up at the Cape Ann Museum on July 16th.

We are pleased to announce two new scholarships of $2500. each to the following:

1. Penland School of Craft in Bakersville, NC, has agreed to choose a young woman of color to attend a workshop this Fall. Penland is a national school of craft, widely recognized for its excellent workshops led by specialists in various crafts from around the world. Our scholarship money will allow a young woman of color to experience the transformational immersion process of Penland School. Ila Prouty, our daughter, first went to Penland over 30 years ago, and it had a life changing effect on her. We are pleased to be connecting our Foundation with this community.

2. Project Adventure, Inc, has chosen a young woman of color from Brooklyn, NY., to participate in two different workshops this August. Charlene Stewart is a staff person at a New York State Division of Youth and Family Justice facility in Brooklyn, where she counsels young people in various wellness programs. Charlene's bio states that "it brings me joy working with youth and families in marginalized communities, while empowering them...". Given our knowledge of the immersive power of Project Adventure workshops, we are confident Charlene will bring home to Brooklyn many tools to help the youth and families in her programs.

Finally, we are thrilled to be sharing Doris's quilts in a retrospective exhibition entitled "In Her Mind's Eye: Doris Elizabeth Prouty" at Cape Ann Museum Green, (13 Poplar Street, Gloucester, 01930), open Fridays to Sundays through July 31, 2022. We hope you’ll stop by to see the quilts, which span over thirty years of work, in person. Ila Prouty will present a talk entitled "Not So Naive: Growth of a Quilter" (click link to view video recording) at 2:00 pm on July 16th at the downtown Cape Ann Museum address, (27 Pleasant St., Gloucester), with a reception to follow. Register for free tickets on the museum website. We hope to see you there!

Looking ahead, we are preparing a catalog of the quilts in the exhibit, with an introduction by Ila, and annotations of the history and stories behind the work in the exhibition. We will send out a link for how to get your copy once it's ready, and consider giving it as a gift to others, with proceeds to go toward the Foundation. Stay tuned!

Thanks for all your support of our work to honor the legacy of Doris Prouty. Her spirit is spreading far and wide with your help!

With warm regards,

Dick Prouty
